MODELING: NOT JUST DRAWING FLOWCHARTS

The current enterprise focus on business processes — whether for productivity, quality improvement,or regulatory compliance — tends to develop a process culture even in business users’ eyes. And the first thing business users want to see is a graphical representation of their business process or processes. Where a piece of paper or a whiteboard is enough to represent simple processes, these traditional tools have been replaced by computer drawing tools with dedicated shapes to ease the standardization, storage, and sharing of diagrams.

Many enterprises start off using diagramming tools and spreadsheets to document their architectures. Although this can be useful initially, ensuring the consistency of these documents becomes extremely difficult once artifacts appear in multiple places. For example, an application might appear on a diagram depicting a server, a diagram depicting a business process and a diagram depicting the application's interfaces. Changes to the application might require updates in all diagrams, introducing opportunities for inconsistency and inaccuracy.

EA tools address this need by storing relevant information in a repository and providing capabilities to structure, and present the information in a variety of ways.

"MEGA pursues a metamodel driven approach toward EA management by providing a highly flexible metamodel further complemented by modelling guidelines. Both metamodel and guidelines can be adapted to completely fit customer demands arising from their EA management approach. The tool additionally offers the possibility for customizing parts of the graphical user interface, as well as the diagram types available for creating visualizations. Working with MEGA the customer is supported by an easy to use graphical user interface, which is mainly handled via tree structures. This approach is supplemented by highly flexible visualizations, resulting in diagrams and reports illustrating the information needed to perform EA management."
